Embrace the joys of winter by escaping to the Perth Hills and exploring this enchanting world of creeks, forests, hills, trails and quaint village centres. Only 30 minutes from Perth, winter is an ideal time to visit - so why not book into one of the many gorgeous accommodation choices nestled amongst the forest and really take the time to explore.   

Start your escape along the Great Eastern Highway towards nature-rich Mundaring. Be sure to check out the John Forrest National Park on the way – WA’s first national park. Here you’ll find mighty trees, walk trails, river and waterfalls.

Make sure you head to Mundaring which comes complete with art galleries, quaint shops and cafes. While in the Mundaring area, you can also out on Mundaring’s Heart of the Hills Wine Trail from here, where you can relax in the magnificent forest surrounds and enjoy award-winning wines – you can pick up a wine trail map at the Mundaring Visitor Centre. You may wish to stop at the Perth Hills National Parks Centre along the way to learn more about the region’s rich natural environment. Also be sure to check out Mundaring Weir and perhaps enjoy a coffee from the thermos while overlooking the still waters.

While you are in the hills, be sure to indulge in the truly enchanting drive through to Kalamunda - a winding journey which will lead you deep into the forest, down valleys and high over hill tops.

Take the time to stop at one of the many lookouts and pullovers along the drive to take in views of the tree-cloaked valleys. You’re bound to encounter some of the prolific bird life while you’re here – with everything from delicate wrens flitting through the undergrowth to raucous black cockatoos screeching from the tree tops.

The town centre of Kalamunda exudes a gloriously quaint village feel, with cosy cafes, restaurants and book and gift shops. You could also wile away hours here visiting many of the local historic attractions and seeing what treasures you can find in the many unique stores.

Kalamunda also offers a great place from which to explore the picturesque Bickley Carmel Valley. Try the journey through the valley on the Bickley Valley Wine Trail. This delightful excursion takes you past some lovely scenery, award-winning wineries, vineyards and roadside stalls.

For some lovely views across the city, complete your escape to the Perth Hills by returning on the Zig Zag scenic drive down the escarpment via Lascelles Drive to Ridge Hill Road.
