Located south of Perth, the Peel Region is a perfect winter escape that includes Internationally listed rare wetlands, deep forests and quaint townships full of charm and history.

Serpentine-Jarrahdale Shire forms the northern part of the region and offers breathtaking scenery within the many forests, parks, rivers and other natural attractions such as the Serpentine Falls. The falls make up just one feature of the Serpentine National Park. The forests also harbour a wealth of walking and cycle tracks. Jarrahdale, the local town offers delightful cafes that line the main street, historic buildings, art & craft galleries and you can also visit nearby award winning wineries.

Further south, Pinjarra and Dwellingup are also beautiful places to visit and boast a range of outdoor adventures. Resting on the banks of the Murray River, Pinjarra is one of WA’s oldest established towns.  With its rich grazing lands and thick forests the area is also known as the horse capital of Western Australia.

The bridle trails ribbon the nearby forests but if you prefer walking, the Pinjarra Heritage Walk Trail skirts the Murray River and is a fascinating way to view the region.

Inland the forested township of Dwellingup is where you can take to the Murray River’s swollen winter rapids by raft or sedately canoe down its slower moving segments. Dwellingup is a popular camping destination and you can also hike, cycle or horse ride along the many forest trails. The Bibbulmun Track, runs through Dwellingup and the Hotham Valley Tourist Railway visits most winter weekends. The Forest Heritage Centre is also a beautiful nearby attraction to visit.

Further inland, Boddington is nestled between rolling hills of forests and farms on the banks of the Hotham River. Combining old fashioned country charm with farming and mining prosperity, around half of the Boddington Shire is state forest. The area is ideal for winter activities such as hiking, picnics, fishing and camping.

Towards the coast, the character township of Waroona lies between forest, farmland, lakes and sea. Waroona offers some fine examples of colonial architecture, antique shops and art galleries and is particularly well known for Lake Navarino and the Waroona Dam.

Nearby, the magnificent Yalgorup National Park contains 11 coastal lakes and wetlands which are home to hundreds of migrating birds. The park also boasts Tuart trees and some of the first living creatures on earth – the captivating Thrombolite living fossils.
