Winter is the perfect time of the year to enjoy the picturesque scenery of the Avon Valley. Imagine driving through this region of rolling green hills, by babbling brooks and rustic farmyards, through quaint town centres and fertile agricultural fields.

The Avon townships also promise a host of winter delights. The town centres in this region boast gorgeous main streets, cafes, art galleries, historical buildings and people will take the time to chat. Stop off at Toodyay, Northam and York and head further on to Goomalling, Beverley and Brookton to really enjoy the delightful country hospitality you’ll find here.

You can start your escape to the Avon Valley by leaving Midland along the Midland Toodyay Road. This pretty road follows the Avon River, leading you deep into the country and eventually onto the picturesque village of Toodyay. Be sure to explore the whole village while you’re here, perhaps shopping at an antique store, having morning tea or lunch at a café, visiting the historic pub or picnicking on the river banks.

From Toodyay, you can turn south on the Northam Toodyay Road to the bustling country township of Northam – WA’s largest inland town and home to over 185 heritage-listed buildings. You may wish to enjoy lunch in one of the character hotels or perhaps you’d prefer to head to the river banks to delight in the romantic sight of a white swan reflected on the river waters. You can view the swans from the heady heights of the pedestrian suspension bridge – the longest of its kind in Australia.

On returning to your car, you may wish to drive south along the Northam York Road to York. This truly delightful town is bursting with country character – from flower-filled cottage gardens and historic stone buildings to quaint shops and cosy cafes.

The Avon River flows through the township, further enhancing its charm, and walk trails line the river banks, offering the perfect excuse to stretch your legs and admire York’s natural beauty.

Why not consider staying at one of the many small hotels and bed and breakfasts in the Avon Valley to really make the most of your time here? The kids will adore the country setting while adults will love the feeling of intimacy these cosy places often boast. You could also try the hot air balloon rides that are available at this time of the year, where you can witness the dawn sun embrace the countryside with light.
