This charming seaside escape just 45 minutes south of Perth forms the southernmost border of the Perth metropolitan area. With beautiful expanses of safe beaches, water sports, and environmental parks, Rockingham is a popular visitor destination and offers a whole host of activities and attractions to keep everyone in the family entertained.

You can visit Garden Island from Rockingham, which is filled with secret beaches and bays – just the spot to stop for a picnic on a sunny winter day. Also keep your eye out for the cute native tammar wallabies while you’re there.

Take the time to visit Lake Richmond – a 40 hectare freshwater lake which is home to endangered thrombolites. These natural structures provide keys to the beginnings of life on earth. You’re also bound to delight in the bird life here, with more than 100 species recorded near the lake’s shores.

Nature lovers should not miss visiting Point Peron while they’re in Rockingham. Here you can go for an exhilarating winter’s walk and climb the rugged limestone cliffs where you can then overlook the islands scattered across the ocean.

Gourmets are also catered to in Rockingham with an excellent choice of cafes and restaurants along the foreshore and several nearby wineries offering excellent varieties from scenic cellar door settings. There’s also some wonderful picnic spots along the foreshore which offer great facilities for a winter day’s BBQ.

History buffs are not forgotten, with the Rockingham Museum as well as the Granary Museum at the CBH Grain Terminal. This museum looks at the history of WA farming and the vital role of the grain industry. History lovers can also set out on the heritage trails, while self drive and bicycle tours also highlight places of historical and present day interest.

With a number of excellent golf courses near by, golfers are also well catered to, as are fishermen with a host of recreational fishing spots available. In fact it seems there’s something for everyone on a Rockingham winter escape.
