For a relaxing getaway that will truly make you feel like you’ve escaped from it all, set out through the fertile countryside that rolls from the coast north of Perth to the charming rural township of Gingin and through the tree-cloaked hills of the Chittering Valley.
Start your escape by heading north to Guilderton which boasts an idyllic coastal setting and is situated on the languid Moore River. There are many walking trails in and around Moore River and fishing, kayaking and canoeing along the river are also high on the agenda for visitors to the region.
Heading further north and you have the coastal township of Lancelin. Take advantage of the cooler winter temperatures to plunge to the bottom of the vast sand hills surrounding Lancelin on a sandboard or 4WD buggy. You could also consider staying overnight in either Lancelin or Guilderton where you can book into a beach house or cottage.
Continuing on your journey, turn away from the coast and head inland along Gingin Brook Road. You may like to stop at one of cafes or tearooms along the way, set amid sprawling cottage gardens. Many of these places offer some wonderful fresh produce from around the region.
Also be sure to turn down Military Road to visit the Gravity Discovery Centre, where scientists are attempting to read gravity waves to gain a whole new insight into the secrets of the universe.
Back on Gingin Brook Road, head to the quaint rural township of Gingin where you will find some interesting colonial and historic architecture. The township centres around the babbling waters of Gingin Brook and is surrounded by farmlands.
This region is also fast developing as the largest olive growing region in Western Australia. Centred around Gingin, the Moore River Olive Region is home to over 70% of olive trees in Western Australia. You can also sample some wonderful fresh produce here such as Gingin beef, honey, citrus, wine and crayfish.
Gingin is also a good starting point for the Chittering Valley Wine Trail. This 76 kilometre trail through the Chittering Valley transports you to a range of delightful wineries. You’ll find several wineries and some wonderful places to stop for lunch. Visiting the wineries is a great way to sample premium wines made from the characteristic grapes of the region.
