City Escapes

The City of Perth is set to transform into a magical winter wonderland this winter as the streets erupt with a riot of performance and activity.

Snowfields in the City returns for the 2008 July school holidays with over 100 tonnes of artificial snow and a giant ski slope filling Forrest Place between 7 – 19 July. Children can experience the thrill of snow as they whiz down the 30 metre long ski slope in colourful, rubber tubes and there will also be a special area to throw snowballs at targets.

More exciting still is the City of Perth Winter Arts Festival from June 1 to August 31. This rich tapestry of artistic offerings promises to transform the city into a cultural haven as theatres and galleries explode with dance, music, theatre and art.

New participants this year include Tura New Music, which provides vital support to emerging and accomplished New Music composers, performers, organisations and audiences.

The Central Tafe Art Gallery will also be in on the action for the first time in the event’s three-year history with a series of exhibitions highlighting the talents of its  students, graduates and other artists. During winter, the Tafe gallery will present a series of shows celebrating creativity in art, architecture, fashion, photo, music and graphic design.

Australia’s oldest modern jazz society, the Perth Jazz Society, will lend a whole new class to the festival as it performs in Forrest Place while ‘Everything Baroque’ will offer baroque music, featuring Gloria, a newly 'discovered' work. This will be the first time this exquisite cantata for soprano has been heard in WA.

For visually striking artwork, there’s the Art Gallery of WA’s Art in Bloom exhibition.  About 200 artists, designers, personalities and select members of public are invited to participate by producing a ‘floral response’ or ‘installation’ based on their own inspiration a particular artwork. This year these artworks will appear in all over the CBD, encouraging you get out and explore.

Other key events in the program will include WA Opera’s The Barber of Seville, the State Library’s exhibition In the Line of Duty: policing in Australia 1788-2006, and The Black Swan Theatre Company will perform Female of the Species and Edward Scissorhands at His Majesty’s Theatre.

The Art Gallery of WA will be presenting an exhibition titled Wonderlust - a dynamic new presentation of the State Art Collection, featuring Indigenous, Australian and international art, craft and design acquired since the gallery’s inception in 1895.

And a riot of other visual and performing arts, classical music, dance, cultural exhibitions and free community events will also take place across the three-month program in the pulsing heart of Perth city.
